Principal Structural Engineer
Remote

At Current Hydro, we lead the way in run-of-river hydropower, utilizing the natural flow of water to produce clean, sustainable energy. Our innovative methods ensure minimal environmental impact while optimizing efficiency and reliability

Our mission is to deliver renewable energy solutions that facilitate America’s shift to a clean energy future. We are dedicated to safety, innovation, environmental stewardship, and active community engagement.

Guided by our core values, we aim to be at the forefront of renewable energy, advancing the transition to a sustainable future with our cutting-edge hydropower solutions

Why This Role, Why Now

For more than a century, hydropower has been a core building block of U.S. energy. At Current Hydro, we’re proving it’s also the backbone of a sustainable future. By leading in run-of-river hydropower, we harness the natural flow of water to deliver clean, reliable, renewable energy with minimal environmental impact. Our projects go beyond just generating power and create century-long assets that revitalize communities, provide stable generational jobs, and accelerate the transition to a carbon-free economy.

We are a company on the rise. In just over a year, we’ve doubled in size and are advancing a pipeline of projects that will soon move into construction. Joining now means stepping into a team that blends innovation with stewardship and speed with staying power. As our Principal Structural Engineer, you’ll shape not only the technical excellence of our structural work but also the culture and team that will carry Current Hydro through its next stage of growth. If you want your expertise to directly fuel the clean energy transition and to leave a legacy that lasts for generations, this is your opportunity.

The Opportunity

This isn’t your average engineering leadership role. At Current Hydro, the Principal Structural Engineer will be both a builder of projects and a builder of people. You’ll lead a strong team of engineers, providing technical direction while also serving as a trusted guide and mentor. We’re looking for someone who can bring deep subject matter expertise, set the bar for excellence, and invest in developing the next generation of hydropower talent.

On the project side, the opportunity is equally compelling. Current Hydro is advancing a pipeline of run-of-river hydropower projects that will soon move into construction, building assets designed to operate for the next 40 to 100 years. Your work will not only shape how these facilities are designed and built, but also establish the technical foundation for a company rapidly emerging as a leader in climate technology.

For the right person, this is a rare blend of technical challenge, leadership opportunity, and long-term impact. You’ll join at a moment when your expertise will directly influence projects, people, and communities, and leave a legacy that will last for generations.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead & Mentor: Provide oversight, technical guidance, and confidence-building mentorship for a strong team of engineers.
  • Own the Standard: Serve as the authority on reinforced concrete, bulkheads, gates, cofferdams, and heavy steel, ensuring designs meet ACI, AISC, and USACE standards.
  • Design & Review: Guide structural designs in 2D/3D CAD (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, REVIT), offering both detailed and high-level reviews.
  • Collaborate Deeply: Partner with civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers for seamless, integrated project delivery.
  • Support Construction: Participate during build phases with submittal reviews, RFI responses, change orders, and site inspections.
  • Anticipate Risks: Spot issues early and guide teams in resolving them with precision.
  • Innovate: Bring fresh perspectives and best practices into every project.
  • Communicate Impact: Translate technical complexity into clarity for leadership, partners, and stakeholders.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s in Structural or Civil Engineering (Master’s or SE preferred). PE required
  • 15+ years in structural engineering, including 5+ years in leadership.
  • Deep experience in concrete hydraulic structures, mass concrete designs, and/or hydropower infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with USACE standards and processes strongly preferred.
